There’s a subtle cruelty to the way Meighan gets picked off here, because she’s first to run and probably right to do so (again, given everyone’s limited knowledge), but it just means she becomes the most conspicuous target.

Meighan’s taste in pornography will not come up again, at any time in either series, but whatever she’s referencing sure sounds like something from Japan. Probably some anime her friends tipped her off to, when she was still discovering herself.

The basic joke of a sci-fi fan looking at some advanced, dangerous technology and going, “Hey, it’s just like that SHOW!” is like the one-celled organism that eventually evolved into Fans, so it seems only right to bring some version of it back when introducing the series to a new audience.
