A good trick, when you want to convince folks that there are, indeed, stakes, is to take a limb!  Folks might be thinking, nah, nothing’s going to happen to Walky.  He’s the main character.  Then off goes an arm, and then they’re like…. okay… re-evaluating………. 

I hear DC Comics does this a lot these days.  They love takin’ those arms.

so the limb thing only kind of works so many times until you get kinda numb to it, btw
