I’m not even sure who we’re supposed to identify with in this strip. Are we supposed to empathize with Joe? With Howard? I just don’t know. What is this strip.
This exposition was legitimately helpful back when this was running in the fall semester following summer break, I imagine. Especially to, y’know, all the new freshmen. I’m sure they were starving for backstory. Starving, I tell you!
This is one of my favorite early strips. I guess hinting at potential physical abuse in the context of personified protectional gear just tickles my funnybone, because I’m a monster.
The friend that Joe was based on was by far the coolest of us three, so Joe and Howard’s interaction in the comic is fairly evocative of their real life dynamic. Evocative, but in no way literal.
At this point, I’m pretty sure I’d run dry of Star Trek things I knew about. Mock only what you know, folks. Mock only what you know.
